Stains, particularly those from red wine, can seem daunting to tackle, but thanks to an expert’s affordable DIY solution there’s hope.

Red wine marks, known for their stubbornness due to high pigment and tannin levels, can be particularly tricky to eliminate.

However, if you act quickly, you can significantly minimise the damage, according to Sam Deeble, a Furniture Specialist at Woods Furniture.

If the spill happened on fabric, you should start by gently blotting the stain with a paper towel to soak up as much of the liquid as possible.

A mixture of two household ingredients can be highly effective for cleaning and treating red wine stains on upholstery.

First, sprinkle one of the ingredients onto the stained area, then add a tablespoon of the second ingredient.

Let the combination sit for a few minutes to activate the reaction, then use a damp microfibre cloth to work the solution into the fabric. Repeat this process as necessary until the stain is lifted.

The expert highlighted that this method is not suitable for wooden furniture, as it may harm the finish.

For red wine stains on wood, immediately blot the area with a soft cloth to absorb excess liquid.

Next, create a gentle soap solution by mixing a small amount of dish soap with warm water, and carefully wipe the affected area without saturating the wood.

If any stain remains, you might want to consider a commercial wood cleaner or stain remover, but always test it in an inconspicuous spot first.

In cases where the stain has penetrated deeply into the wood’s finish, light sanding followed by the application of a wood polish may be necessary to restore its appearance.

For milk-based drink stains, the cleaning pro recommended: "While wooden furniture has a wipeable surface, it’s important to address any spills immediately to avoid lasting damage.

“A simple solution of dish soap and warm water works effectively for cleaning wooden surfaces.

“Mix one teaspoon of dish soap with one cup of warm water, and use a clean microfibre cloth to gently wipe the affected area. This should remove the spill without leaving a mark.”
